Job Summary:

The Equipment Operator II is a skilled field position responsible for operating medium-sized equipment such as loaders, backfill trackhoes, and similar machinery to support excavation, grading, and site preparation work. This role requires precision, technical awareness, and the ability to troubleshoot and adjust equipment in real-time. Operator II serves as a key contributor on job sites—supporting foremen, mentoring less experienced operators, and ensuring equipment tasks align with project specifications. Success in this role requires strong machine control, an understanding of site plans and grades, and a proactive mindset toward safety and efficiency.

Equipment Operators are also representatives of Beck Construction & Excavation, Inc. and are expected to uphold a strong work ethic, follow safety guidelines, and demonstrate professionalism while on job sites. This role offers on-the-job training and the opportunity to learn and grow within the construction field.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Operate medium-sized equipment such as loaders, backfill trackhoes, and similar machinery to perform excavation, backfill, slope shaping, and subgrade preparation.
  • Safely load and unload trucks, ensuring proper weight distribution and secure transport of materials.
  • Perform detailed site work in coordination with grade stakes, site plans, and project specifications.
  • Perform thorough daily pre- and post-operation inspections of assigned equipment, including checks on tires/tracks, hydraulic lines, fluid levels, and safety systems. Maintain equipment cleanliness and complete routine care such as greasing, clearing debris, and reporting issues promptly. Operators are expected to take ownership of their machines, ensuring they are clean, well-maintained, and operating safely to extend equipment life and minimize downtime.
  • Use technical tools such as laser grading systems, compaction meters, or other precision instruments to perform work accurately.
  • Troubleshoot minor mechanical or operational issues on-site and escalate complex problems to the maintenance team.
  • Maintain accurate equipment logs, including usage, maintenance, and task completion records.
  • Make real-time operational adjustments to respond to changing site conditions, material deliveries, or project updates.
  • Collaborate with foremen and site supervisors to ensure equipment tasks are aligned with project timelines and milestones.
  • Act as a communication link between field crew and leadership, reporting on site progress, needs, and potential issues.
  • Assist in mentoring and guiding Equipment Operator I team members to build skillsets and promote safety awareness.
  • Promote and maintain a safe, clean, and organized worksite by following all safety protocols and modeling professional conduct.
  • Participate in and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement in safety and field operations.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Proficient in operating a variety of small and medium-sized equipment such as loaders and backfill trackhoes.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret grade stakes, project plans, and site specifications.
  • Capable of using laser grading systems, compaction meters, and other field instruments.
  • Skilled in recognizing equipment wear or mechanical issues and taking appropriate action.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities, site conditions, and unforeseen challenges without constant supervision.
  • Effective communication skills to coordinate with site leadership and support junior team members.
  • Experience completing excavation, backfill, and material movement tasks with a high level of accuracy and efficiency.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, situational awareness, and commitment to crew safety and productivity.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding labor, including lifting 50+ pounds, working on your feet for extended periods, and safely navigating uneven or changing terrain.
  • Able to think and respond quickly in dynamic construction environments.
  • Dependable and punctual, with a strong work ethic and willingness to learn.
  • Follows verbal and written instructions accurately and efficiently.
  • Willing to assist with a variety of crew tasks as needed to support project progress.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
